A Common Low-Calorie Artificial Sweetener is Linked to Higher Risk of Blood Clotting

A recent investigation into the widely used sweetener erythritol has raised alarm bells about its potential health implications, particularly concerning blood clot risks. This study, conducted by researchers at a notable medical institution, found a significant correlation between erythritol consumption and increased platelet activity, which is a crucial factor in blood clot formation. The implications of these findings could be substantial, especially for individuals with pre-existing health conditions.

Erythritol is commonly found in an array of products marketed as low-calorie or sugar-free. These include diet sodas, sugar-free gum, protein shakes, and various food items aimed at those following ketogenic diets. Often blended with other sweeteners like stevia or monk fruit, erythritol has gained popularity as a seemingly healthier alternative to traditional sugar. However, this latest study suggests that its consumption might not be as innocuous as previously thought.

In the study, participants who ingested a 30-gram serving of erythritol exhibited a sharp increase in platelet aggregation—essentially, the clumping together of blood cells that can lead to clot formation. This reaction was contrasted with the effects observed after consuming regular sugar, which did not prompt similar changes in platelet behaviour. The researchers noted that the levels of erythritol in the bloodstream surged dramatically, reaching over a thousand times higher than baseline levels shortly after consumption. Such a spike raises concerns about the cumulative effects of regular erythritol intake.

Blood clots pose serious health risks; they can travel through the bloodstream to vital organs such as the heart and brain, potentially causing heart attacks or strokes. Furthermore, clots can migrate to the lungs, resulting in pulmonary embolism—an often life-threatening condition. Given the prevalence of erythritol in many diet products, the potential for widespread exposure among consumers is troubling.

Despite the serious nature of these findings, representatives from the food industry have disputed their implications. Some industry groups argue that erythritol has been deemed safe for consumption by global regulatory agencies for over three decades. They assert that the new study’s conclusions are misleading and do not account for the broader context of erythritol’s historical safety record.

The research involved a small group of healthy adults—20 individuals with normal kidney function—averaging about 30 years old. After fasting overnight, half of the participants consumed glucose while the other half ingested erythritol. Blood samples collected before and after consumption provided insight into how each substance affected platelet behaviour. The stark contrast in platelet activity prompted researchers to call for more extensive studies to explore the long-term health ramifications of erythritol and other sugar alcohols.

While erythritol is often marketed as a natural sweetener due to its calorie-free status and its occurrence in certain fruits and vegetables, it is typically produced industrially through fermentation processes. This means that individuals may consume it in quantities much larger than those found naturally in food. In light of the current study’s findings, experts are urging consumers to reconsider reliance on artificial sweeteners like erythritol, especially those who may already be at heightened risk for cardiovascular issues.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to classify erythritol as “generally recognised as safe” (GRAS). This designation is based on existing research that supports its safety when consumed within typical dietary limits. Yet, experts caution that this designation may not fully encompass potential risks associated with long-term consumption or higher doses.

Health professionals recommend being mindful of dietary choices, particularly for individuals prone to heart disease or those taking medications that affect platelet function. The current evidence suggests that it may be prudent for consumers to limit their intake of erythritol and explore alternatives that might be safer.

Natural sweeteners such as pure maple syrup, honey, dates, and coconut sugar are gaining traction as preferable substitutes. These options not only provide sweetness but also come with additional nutrients and benefits not found in processed alternatives. Experts advocate for moderation when it comes to sweetener use, emphasising that while reducing added sugars is beneficial, occasional use of natural sugars may be less risky than regular consumption of artificial counterparts.

Moreover, recent guidelines from prominent health organisations suggest a reevaluation of non-nutritive sweeteners for weight management and chronic disease prevention. As more information emerges regarding the long-term health effects of substances like erythritol, consumers are encouraged to stay informed and cautious regarding their dietary choices.

While erythritol has been celebrated by some as a low-calorie alternative to sugar, recent evidence suggests it may come with hidden risks—particularly concerning blood clot formation. The current study highlights the need for ongoing research into the safety of artificial sweeteners and calls for consumers to carefully consider their use. As knowledge about these substances evolves, prioritising natural food sources and sweeteners may be the wisest course for maintaining overall health and well-being.
