Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City (SMC) has partnered with Klinik Kesihatan Taman Medan to support the Health Ministry’s National Health Screening Initiative (NHSI).
The three-day screening programme involved more than 900 SMC staff and covered tests for blood sugar, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI) and cholesterol. Female staff also underwent breast screening and HPV screening.
The initiative comes as Malaysia continues to face a significant burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2023 found that more than half a million adults, or 2.5% of the population, are living with four NCDs: diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and obesity.
The survey also showed that two in five adults aged 18 and above did not undergo any health screening for NCDs in the past 12 months.
For cancer screening, 46% of women aged 18 and above did not perform breast self-examination in the past 12 months, while 65% of women aged 20 and above did not undergo a pap smear test in the past three years.
Early detection is considered important in identifying conditions that may lead to complications such as kidney disease and heart disease. Obesity is also a known risk factor for cardiovascular and metabolic disorders.
SMC chief executive officer Erica Lam said the initiative reflects the importance of timely screening and medical intervention.
“The Ministry’s National Health Screening Initiative underscores the importance of proactive health management and timely medical intervention,” she said.
“The initiative with Klinik Kesihatan Taman Medan exemplifies a successful public-private collaboration aligning with the Ministry’s vision to encourage a healthier and more resilient workforce,” she added.
Dr Erleena Nur binti Hassan, head of Klinik Kesihatan Taman Medan and family medicine specialist, said early detection helps reduce the risk of complications from NCDs.
“Early detection is the cornerstone of preventing complications from NCDs,” she said.
“This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to making preventive healthcare more accessible and empowering the community to take charge of their health.”
NHSI is one of the initiatives under the Healthy Malaysia National Agenda and is aimed at detecting, preventing and managing NCDs through early intervention. Screening results and summaries will be recorded in the MySejahtera application.
SMC, the flagship hospital of Sunway Healthcare Group, said it has more than 300 resident medical consultants and offers services across more than 80 medical specialities and 28 Centres of Excellence.
Upon completion of its sixth block, Tower F (Children’s Pavilion), the hospital said it will have capacity for more than 1,000 beds.
The hospital was recently ranked among the top 250 hospitals globally for three consecutive years since 2024 in Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals rankings, and entered the top 350 in Newsweek’s World’s Best Smart Hospitals 2026 ranking.
