China is expected to experience a slight increase in COVID-19 infections during the upcoming Spring Festival, according to officials in the news. The surge is predicted due to the anticipated large floating population during the holiday season, along with other contributing factors. Lei Zhenglong, an official from the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration, highlighted that various regions across the country may witness the coexistence or alternating prevalence of several respiratory infectious diseases.
Since the onset of winter in 2023, China has observed the co-circulation of multiple pathogens, resulting in alternating peaks of acute respiratory infectious diseases. While the influenza epidemic has been experiencing significant fluctuations, COVID-19 cases have remained at a low level. The predominant strains identified have been XBB and its sublineages. However, there has been an increase in infections caused by the JN.1 strain.
Lu Hongzhou, the head of the Third People’s Hospital of Shenzhen, stated that although the JN.1 variant has shown an increased ability to evade the immune system, there is currently no evidence suggesting an escalation in its pathogenicity. It is worth noting that most residents have already experienced two or even three COVID-19 infections since December 2022. Research data indicates that such prior infections can lead individuals to produce neutralising antibodies against the Omicron variants. Therefore, China’s existing experience and medical resources are deemed sufficient to handle a potential small rise in JN.1 infections.
To ensure the stability of the epidemic situation during the Spring Festival holidays, authorities have implemented various measures. These include strengthening prevention and control measures at ports, enhancing epidemic monitoring and early warning systems, and providing health services and management for key populations such as the elderly and patients with chronic underlying diseases. Additionally, the promotion of COVID-19 and influenza vaccines remains a priority.
Lu emphasized the continued importance of COVID-19 vaccination in better protecting individuals against severe infections. Moreover, authorities are committed to improving emergency response mechanisms and enhancing capabilities to handle clustered epidemic outbreaks promptly and effectively. Targeted allocation of medical resources, including increased staffing and supplies in key departments such as outpatient, pediatrics, respiratory, and intensive care in medical institutions, will be prioritised. Market supply and reserves of common drugs such as those used for cold, fever, and cough will also be increased.
As China prepares for the Spring Festival, it is evident that proactive measures are being taken to mitigate the potential rise in COVID-19 cases. By strengthening preventive measures, enhancing medical resources, and promoting vaccination, the country aims to ensure the well-being and safety of its citizens during this festive period.
