Regular Physical Activity Might Increase Your Lifespan Up to About 7 Years More

Researchers conducted a systematic search of PubMed, a vast database of medical and scientific articles, identifying studies that compared life expectancy among active versus inactive adults, as well as among athletes and non-athletes. The review focused on high-quality cohort studies — long-term investigations following groups of people over several years.

What emerged was a consistent pattern: being physically active correlates with living longer. This association holds true across different populations, ages, and sexes. For example, one study following middle-aged men and women found that those engaging in regular vigorous activities—like brisk walking, cycling, or sports—added approximately three to four years to their life expectancy compared to sedentary peers.

Interestingly, leisure-time physical activity appeared more beneficial than physical activity accumulated through daily work or chores. This might be because leisure activities often involve sustained, purposeful movement that boosts cardiovascular health and fitness more effectively.

Hence, while elite endurance sports seem beneficial for lifespan extension, more research is needed to understand the broader picture fully.
