New research indicates that lifestyle choices made at the age of 60 could significantly influence the risk of developing dementia in later years. This discovery, unveiled recently in a report, underscores the importance of early detection and proactive measures to potentially delay the onset of dementia and mitigate its impact.
The study revealed that cognitive ability, lifestyle factors, and physical health are critical predictors of dementia risk, providing insight up to two decades before symptoms typically manifest. Among the lifestyle factors identified are diabetes, lack of exercise, and limited work history. These findings suggest that addressing barriers such as cost and accessibility could expand the reach of routine cognitive testing, connecting more individuals to early-stage treatments and resources.
This research, conducted by a nonprofit research organisation, highlights that cognitive ability, functional limitations, and physical health are strong indicators of dementia risk, potentially predicting its development up to 20 years in advance. Despite this, current uptake of cognitive testing among older adults remains low. However, the research suggests that participation would likely increase if tests were free and easily accessible, coupled with improved treatment options.
Early detection of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias is crucial over the age of 65. Existing disease-modifying treatments are most effective in the early stages. Yet, only about 16% of individuals in this age group undergo cognitive assessments during routine check-ups with their primary care providers.
The researchers conducted three pivotal studies aimed at identifying those at greatest risk for cognitive impairment, exploring ways to enhance cognitive testing among older adults, and encouraging at-risk individuals to maintain brain health care.
The first study analysed data from the Health and Retirement Study, a nationally representative survey involving approximately 20,000 older adults and their households in the U.S., ongoing since 1992. This analysis pinpointed lifestyle factors such as lack of exercise, obesity, and not engaging in hobbies at age 60 as key predictors of dementia risk from a review of 181 potential risk factors.
Additionally, the study uncovered regional variations in dementia risk. Lower-income individuals showed a higher risk whereas race and ethnicity were not independent risk factors once education and income were considered. Interestingly, parental health, family size, and marital history were not significant predictors of dementia.
The research underscores the importance of adopting a lifestyle that supports brain health throughout life. Understanding what increases the risk of dementia can assist doctors and policymakers in identifying people most at risk and providing the right support to slow down or lessen cognitive decline’s impact.
The study highlighted several strong predictors of developing dementia: poor physical health, experiencing a stroke, having particular genes that predict future cognitive impairment and dementia risk, lacking private health insurance at age 60, having worked very few years or not at all, having diabetes or a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or more at age 60, never drinking alcohol or drinking excessively, never exercising, and scoring low on various physical tests such as grip strength, walking speed, and balance. Additionally, being less conscientious and having low engagement in hobbies and activities that involve learning new things were also identified as risks.
Another study explored how people respond when facing cognitive issues. Using data from a long-term U.S. survey, it found that newly diagnosed dementia patients are far more likely to act. Notably, 25% of respondents sought financial help from children compared to just 2% of those without a diagnosis. Even without a formal diagnosis, 29% of people showing signs of dementia sought financial help, suggesting many recognise changes and begin planning early. A diagnosis often prompts practical steps like creating a living will, assigning power of lawyer or moving in with family for support.
The report highlighted common-sense risk factors such as stroke, poor health, diabetes, limited work history or lacking private health insurance at age 60 as increased risk factors for developing dementia.
Experts pointed out that the study provides valuable insights into early risk factors for dementia using a large, nationally representative sample. It highlights modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors, including lifestyle behaviours, socioeconomic status, and health markers. However, while the report is robust in its methodology, its reliance on observational data limits the ability to establish causation. Factors such as physical activity and social engagement are associated with lower dementia risk but cannot definitively determine whether these behaviours prevent cognitive decline or merely mark better baseline cognitive health.
The implications of this study are clear: there are tangible actions people can take for ‘brain health’ to prevent dementia. Engaging in physical exercise, working additional years, participating in hobbies and activities involving new information after retirement, and maintaining good physical health are likely preventive measures against developing dementia.
These findings highlight the importance of understanding the early signs and risks associated with dementia. As research continues to evolve, it’s crucial for individuals to be proactive about their brain health by considering lifestyle changes that could make a difference in their long-term cognitive wellbeing.
