Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad has announced that the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852) is anticipated to be enforced by October, pending no further delays.
According to Dzulkefly, all regulations and orders associated with the Act have received approval from the Attorney-General’s Chambers. He stated, “We are in the final phase. This October, God willing, we will implement four regulations and one order, as approved by the AGC.”
He acknowledged a previous delay in enforcement but expressed hope for implementation this October. Although there was a desire to start in September, he noted that if that is not possible, October will be the target date.
Act 852, which was gazetted on February 2 after receiving royal assent on January 24, aims to prohibit the sale and purchase of tobacco products, smoking materials, and tobacco substitutes to minors. It also forbids the provision of any smoking-related services to minors. Currently, nicotine vape products remain legal for those under 18 until Act 852 is enforced.
