18-Year-Old Outstanding Malaysian Student Dies from a Rare Liver Disease

Tan Qiao Qi, an 18-year-old student from SMJK Jit Sin Ⅱ SPS, bravely battled a rare liver disease, ultimately succumbing to it on June 19th. Earlier this year, during her SPM exams in January, she fell ill and was diagnosed with Recurrent Embryonal Sarcoma of the liver. Despite undergoing extensive treatment including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, her condition deteriorated, leading to her passing at around 7 PM.

Qiao Qi’s family, comprising her father Tan Chai Hee and mother Ng Sook Chin, faced immense financial strain due to the exorbitant medical expenses. Tan Chai Hee, a night market vendor, and Ng Sook Chin, a shop owner, struggled to support their eldest daughter’s university education while dealing with the staggering costs of Qiao Qi’s treatment, which amounted to RM550,000.

In a heartwarming display of community solidarity, according to the press, One Hope Charity & Welfare initiated a fundraising campaign on May 2nd to alleviate the family’s financial burden. The response was overwhelming, with the required amount raised within a mere five hours. This remarkable feat underscored the power of collective compassion and support in times of adversity.

Qiao Qi’s arduous journey was marked by unwavering resilience and unwavering determination. Despite facing multiple surgeries, intubation, and rounds of chemotherapy, her battle against the relentless disease was fraught with challenges. The rollercoaster of hope and despair she experienced as the cancer recurred intermittently painted a poignant picture of her courage and fortitude.

Throughout her six-month ordeal, Qiao Qi found solace in the unwavering support of her school community, including fellow students and dedicated staff members. Revered for her grace and captivating dance performances, she left an indelible mark on her school as a stellar student and cherished individual. Her departure created a palpable void, extinguishing the radiant presence she once embodied on stage.

Expressions of gratitude and remembrance poured in from those whose lives Qiao Qi had touched. Her infectious energy and unwavering spirit inspired many to confront life’s adversities with courage. The memory of her beaming smile, brimming with warmth and positivity, remains etched in the hearts of all who knew her intimately.

Despite the tribulations she faced, Qiao Qi maintained an optimistic outlook and continued to radiate joy and kindness to those around her. Her remarkable blend of strength and gentleness in the face of adversity serves as a poignant reminder of the power of resilience and compassion in the face of adversity.
