Music has long been known to have a soothing effect on the mind and body, and many people rely on it to help them fall asleep. However, a recent study has shed light on the surprising types of music that people listen to in order to drift off into dreamland.
Researchers analysed nearly 1,000 music playlists on the popular streaming platform Spotify, all of which were specifically curated to induce sleep. What they discovered was unexpected: alongside the expected ambient tracks, they found a significant number of contemporary radio hits, including pop and indie songs. This finding challenges the commonly held belief that classical and instrumental music are the go-to genres for sleep music.
The study, published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE, revealed that both pop and rap music had more occurrences in the playlists than classical or instrumental music. This revelation has sparked curiosity among experts in the field, as the human brain typically seeks patterns and familiarity. It appears that structured, symmetrical, and predictable songs, regardless of their genre, may be more conducive to sleep.
Expert explains that the brain craves predictability and dislikes sudden changes in tempo or intensity. Songs that are highly danceable or energetic can still be effective sleep aids if they possess these qualities. However, familiarity with the music is also crucial. Novelty tends to keep the brain awake, so songs that are already known and recognisable may be more effective in promoting sleep.
Music’s calming effect is not surprising given the prevalence of sleep issues. Music has the power to create a soothing environment conducive to relaxation. However, it is important to note that it is not the danceability of the music that determines its sleep-inducing qualities. Rather, it is the emotional response it evokes. For some individuals, upbeat music can have a calming effect, while for others, it may be more distracting.
While music can be a valuable aid in falling asleep, it is essential to approach it with care. Expert advises against wearing headphones that may become tangled or require removal during the night. Instead, using a sleep timer to automatically turn off the music can be beneficial. Additionally, following good sleep hygiene practices, such as avoiding screen time before bed and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, can enhance the quality of sleep.
Creating a sleep routine that incorporates music as a signal to go to sleep can be particularly helpful. Sleep experts generally emphasise the importance of a strict sleep-wake schedule, even on weekends and days off. Consistency is key in training the body to sleep well and maintaining a healthy sleep pattern.
Music can be a powerful tool in aiding sleep, as long as it is not overly stimulating. It can help create a relaxed and contemplative mindset, conducive to deep sleep. By selecting familiar songs that are structured and predictable, individuals can enhance their chances of falling asleep peacefully. So, if you’re struggling to doze off at night, consider turning to your favourite tunes to lull you into a restful slumber.
