Monash University has conferred the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, on Tan Sri Dr Yahya Awang in recognition of his lifelong contributions to the cardiothoracic discipline, including his pivotal role in establishing Malaysia’s National Heart Institute (Institut Jantung Negara, IJN).
The honorary doctorate was conferred at a special ceremony held at the Majestic Hotel Ballroom, in conjunction with the launch of Tan Sri Dr Yahya’s book, Heart to Heart. The event was attended by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tun Dr Hasmah Mohd Ali, who served as guests of honour.
Tan Sri Dr Yahya is widely regarded as one of Malaysia’s foremost cardiothoracic surgeons and a central figure in the development of modern cardiac care in the country. He is also known for performing two coronary artery bypass surgeries on former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The honorary doctorate was bestowed by Professor Wayne Hodgson, Member of the Monash University Council and Dean of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, who presided over the conferral on behalf of the University Council.
