DAP Leader Phee Boon Poh Fights for Life After Sudden Cardiac Arrest

Former state executive councillor Phee Boon Poh, 72, is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Penang after suffering a cardiac arrest last night, according to Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Chow mentioned that he was informed of the situation by Phee’s daughter, Syn Tze, who is also the assemblyman for Sungai Puyu. “I received a message from Syn Tze at 11:45 pm informing me that her father had suffered a cardiac arrest,” Chow told reporters at an event in Seberang Jaya, according to FMT

Phee is now in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital and has regained consciousness this morning. Chow urged everyone to pray for Phee’s swift recovery.

Meanwhile, Chinese-language daily Kwong Wah Yit Poh reported that Syn Tze said the family is still awaiting a detailed examination to determine the cause of the sudden collapse. “Paramedics arrived at the scene within five minutes after receiving my call and immediately provided emergency care before rushing my father to the hospital,” she was quoted as saying.

Phee served as the assemblyman for Sungai Puyu from 2004 until 2023, completing three terms as a state executive councillor before choosing not to seek reelection in the Penang state election last year. His daughter was fielded as his replacement.

Cardiac arrest is a serious medical condition where the heart suddenly stops beating, leading to a loss of blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. This can happen without warning and requires immediate medical attention.

Prevention is key and involves adopting a healthy lifestyle, such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol intake.

Additionally, it’s important to manage underlying health conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol through regular health check-ups. If you experience symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, or unusual fatigue, seek medical help right away. Regular visits to your healthcare provider can help catch potential issues early and keep your heart in good shape.
