Screening is Crucial for Prevention, Yet 76% have Never Been Screened for Diabetes

The prevalence of pre-diabetes among millions of Malaysians has sparked concerns among experts, highlighting the importance of early detection to prevent the progression to full-blown diabetes. The Malaysian Pharmacists Society (MPS) president emphasised the significance of preventive measures that can prompt necessary actions to be taken in a timely manner. The proposal for free pre-diabetes tests at all pharmacies has been suggested, subject to government policy, with the alternative option of offering these tests at a reasonable price through community pharmacists.

Recent remarks by the Deputy Health Minister shed light on the alarming statistics, indicating that nearly five million Malaysians are currently at risk of developing diabetes due to pre-diabetic conditions. Moreover, a survey revealed a startling fact that 76% of respondents had never undergone diabetes screening, despite showing no apparent symptoms of the disease. These findings underscore the urgent need for increased health literacy and awareness among the Malaysian population.

Under the Health Ministry’s White Paper and the Sihat Malaysia national agenda, a strong emphasis is being placed on preventive and promotive care, with a focus on encouraging more individuals to undergo pre-diabetes screening. Community pharmacists play a crucial role in advocating for these tests and recommending further medical consultation if necessary, thereby acting as a frontline defence against the progression to diabetes.

The Stand Against Pre-diabetes (SAPd) programme recently organised an event aimed at preventing Type 2 diabetes mellitus by providing free capillary blood glucose testing at 700 community pharmacies nationwide. This initiative, supported by Roche Diagnostics, seeks to raise awareness about the risks associated with Type 2 diabetes, which can disrupt the body’s ability to utilise sugar effectively and lead to elevated blood sugar levels if left untreated. The long-term consequences of uncontrolled Type 2 diabetes can result in severe damage to nerves and blood vessels.

While finger prick tests can offer initial insights into blood glucose levels, a comprehensive blood test at a laboratory, clinic, or hospital is essential for confirming pre-diabetic conditions. The availability of such tests at pharmacies not only enhances accessibility but also empowers individuals to take proactive steps towards managing their health. By identifying individuals at risk of pre-diabetes early on, healthcare professionals can provide tailored guidance on lifestyle modifications and dietary adjustments to help maintain normal blood glucose levels.

Healthcare experts have stressed the importance of dispelling misconceptions surrounding pre-diabetes and encouraging individuals to take proactive steps towards early detection. Many individuals may underestimate the severity of pre-diabetic conditions or may be in denial upon receiving a diagnosis. However, with proper education and guidance from healthcare providers, individuals are more likely to embrace the importance of regular screenings and adopt healthier lifestyle choices to mitigate their risk of developing diabetes.

The role of community pharmacists in promoting pre-diabetes testing cannot be understated, as they serve as trusted sources of information and support for individuals seeking guidance on managing their health. By offering affordable and accessible testing options, pharmacists play a vital role in bridging the gap between early detection and timely intervention. Through targeted interventions and personalised recommendations, healthcare professionals can empower individuals to take charge of their health and make informed decisions about their well-being.

Various types of pre-diabetes tests, such as A1C, fasting blood sugar tests, random blood sugar tests, and glucose tolerance tests, are available to assess an individual’s risk of developing diabetes. These tests provide valuable insights into an individual’s blood glucose levels and help healthcare providers tailor interventions accordingly. By leveraging the expertise of healthcare professionals and utilising innovative testing methods, individuals can proactively manage their health and reduce their risk of progressing to diabetes.

The proactive measures taken by healthcare professionals and community organisations to promote pre-diabetes testing are essential in addressing the rising prevalence of diabetes among Malaysians. By raising awareness about the importance of early detection and empowering individuals to take charge of their health, we can collectively work towards a healthier future for all. Through collaborative efforts and targeted interventions, we can combat the growing burden of diabetes and pave the way for a healthier and more resilient society.
