These Healthy Lifestyle May Offset Cognitive Decline Even in People With Dementia

A recent study published in JAMA Neurology sheds light on the profound effects of leading a healthy and active lifestyle on cognitive decline. The research, conducted on 586 individuals as part of the Rush Memory and Aging Project, highlights how simple lifestyle choices can significantly slow down mental deterioration, even in individuals diagnosed with dementia.

The study delves into the correlation between physical activity, dietary habits, smoking, alcohol consumption, and cognitive decline. The findings suggest that individuals who engage in regular physical activity, maintain a balanced diet, and steer clear of smoking and excessive alcohol consumption exhibit slower rates of cognitive decline. These healthy lifestyle habits are believed to promote brain cell growth, combat inflammation in the brain, and enhance vascular function, thereby preserving cognitive function as individuals age.

One of the key takeaways from the study is the positive impact of a healthier lifestyle on cognitive function, irrespective of the presence of brain pathologies like Alzheimer’s disease. Participants with higher lifestyle scores not only demonstrated better cognitive function but also exhibited lower levels of beta-amyloid plaque, a protein associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

The protective effect of lifestyle factors on brain function in older adults, even in the midst of cognitive decline, underscores the significance of adopting healthy habits early on. The study’s findings align with existing evidence that emphasises the cognitive benefits of a healthy lifestyle and its potential to reduce the risk of dementia, even in individuals genetically predisposed to the condition.

Moreover, the study underscores the importance of modifying lifestyle factors to promote cognitive health. By engaging in physical activity, cognitive stimulation, and maintaining a well-rounded diet, individuals can enhance brain blood flow, improve heart health, increase brain activity, and stimulate brain cell growth and plasticity.

The research also points towards the role of lifestyle factors in preventing neuroinflammation and oxidative stress in the brain, further highlighting the multifaceted benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle. Recommendations from experts include dedicating 150 minutes per week to physical activity, engaging in cognitively stimulating tasks, nurturing social connections, and following a balanced diet to support overall brain health.

While the impact of lifestyle on cognitive function is most pronounced in older adults without dementia, individuals with existing brain pathologies can still benefit from incorporating healthy habits into their daily routine. The study underscores the importance of holistic approaches to cognitive health, emphasising the significance of social, cognitive, and physical activities in improving outcomes for individuals with dementia.

The study’s findings reinforce the notion that a healthy lifestyle is a cornerstone of overall well-being, with far-reaching benefits for brain health and cognitive function. By making simple yet impactful lifestyle changes, individuals can take proactive steps towards preserving cognitive health and enhancing quality of life as they age.
