Surprising Benefits of Watermelons: A Boost for Your Cardiometabolic Health

Watermelons are rich in nutrients like potassium, vitamin C, and magnesium. They also have a high amount of antioxidants including lycopene and l-citrulline.

Research has shown that using watermelon supplements and extracts can help to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Although there are fewer studies on the effects of raw watermelon, the ones that do exist often involve consuming over 2 lbs per day.

However, these studies still suggest that eating watermelon is linked to reduced body weight and cholesterol levels, as well as a lower risk of breast, lung, and prostate cancer.

Two recent studies delved into the health benefits of consuming watermelon.

The first study, which was published in Nutrients, discovered that individuals of all ages who consumed watermelon had a higher intake of several nutrients such as dietary fiber, magnesium, and potassium compared to those who did not consume it. Additionally, they had a lower intake of added sugars and saturated fatty acids.

The second study, also published in Nutrients, revealed that drinking watermelon juice for two weeks can safeguard vascular function.

The key message is to incorporate a variety of fruits into your daily diet, with a focus on watermelon and citrus fruits. Consuming fruits on a daily basis is crucial as they contain antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, dietary fiber, and water. These nutrients can enhance cardiovascular function, brain function, skin health, and may even reduce the risk of certain cancers.
