FDA Approves Sunscreen Ingredient Long Used in Europe and Parts of Asia

What is bemotrizinol?

Bemotrizinol, also known by the trade name PARSOL Shield, is a chemical UV filter. Sunscreen ingredients work by absorbing, reflecting or scattering UV rays before they damage the skin.

UV radiation comes in two main types that matter for sunscreen:

  • UVB, which is the main cause of sunburn
  • UVA, which penetrates deeper into the skin and is linked to skin ageing and also contributes to skin cancer risk

Bemotrizinol is described as a broad-spectrum filter, meaning it helps protect against both UVA and UVB rays. It is also photostable, which means it does not break down quickly in sunlight.

Why this approval matters now

According to the FDA, bemotrizinol is the first new sunscreen ingredient approved in more than 20 years. For a country that has often lagged behind Europe and other regions in access to newer UV filters, that is a notable regulatory change.

The FDA has said the ingredient can be used in over-the-counter sunscreen products, which may give manufacturers more options when designing products for daily use.

How bemotrizinol works

Like other chemical UV filters, bemotrizinol helps protect skin by absorbing UV radiation and converting it into a less harmful form of energy.

Its value lies in a few practical features:

  1. It covers both UVA and UVB This means it can help reduce the two main forms of UV damage.
  2. It remains stable in sunlight Some older filters break down more quickly after exposure to UV light, which can weaken protection. Photostability helps keep performance more reliable.
  3. It works at relatively low concentrations That gives formulators more flexibility when creating sunscreens.
  4. It tends to be less visible on the skin Products can often be made lighter and with less white cast than some mineral-only sunscreens.

These are formulation advantages rather than proof that it is better for every person in every setting. But they may help produce sunscreens people are more likely to wear consistently.

What the evidence shows so far

The evidence supporting bemotrizinol’s use is mostly based on regulatory review, laboratory data and long-term use in other countries, rather than on new large human trials specifically testing health outcomes.

That matters because sunscreens are not usually approved on the basis of showing they prevent skin cancer in a single study. Instead, regulators assess whether the ingredient can safely and effectively filter UV light, whether it causes problems on the skin, and how much is absorbed into the body.

In the case of bemotrizinol, the FDA review concluded that it met the agency’s standards for use in sunscreen products.

Still, it is worth being cautious. Long-term real-world performance depends on the final product, how it is used, whether enough is applied and whether people reapply it properly.

How strong is the evidence?

The evidence that bemotrizinol is a useful UV filter is fairly strong. It has a long track record in markets outside the US, and its broad-spectrum activity and photostability are well described.

A better sunscreen ingredient can support better protection, but public health benefit depends on uptake, affordability, correct use and whether people use sunscreen together with other sun-safe measures such as shade and protective clothing.

There are also questions that will only be answered once the ingredient is used in more products and in larger numbers of people over time.

What this could mean for the public

Current guidance still applies, always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an appropriate sun protection factor (SPF), apply enough to cover exposed skin, and reapply regularly, especially after swimming or sweating.

What may change is the range of products available. Bemotrizinol could help manufacturers produce sunscreens that:

  • offer stronger UVA protection
  • feel lighter and more pleasant to wear
  • are less likely to leave a white cast
  • may be easier for sensitive-skin users to tolerate

That may sound like a small point, but comfort matters. People often use sunscreen less consistently when they dislike how it feels on the skin.

Policy and market implications

The FDA approval may also influence the broader sunscreen market in the world. More ingredient choice could encourage competition and lead to more varied formulations.

That is especially relevant because the US regulatory pathway for sunscreen ingredients has often been criticised as slower than in Europe and parts of Asia. In that context, the approval of bemotrizinol may be seen as a sign that the market could gradually open to newer filters and manufacturers around the world will be more likely to use it.

At the same time, a single approval does not solve broader issues such as access, pricing or public understanding of how to use sunscreen effectively.

Several questions remain.

It is not yet clear:

  • how quickly US companies will bring bemotrizinol-based products to international market and how other regulators respond to this.
  • how widely the ingredient will be used
  • how it will perform in different product types and skin tones
  • whether it will change sunscreen habits in the general public

Researchers and regulators will also continue to watch for safety signals as the ingredient is used more widely.

The FDA’s approval of bemotrizinol is a meaningful development. It adds a modern, effective and broad-spectrum UV filter that has already been used in other regions for years.

For the public, the main takeaway is simple. This is not a replacement for careful sun protection, but it may lead to better, more comfortable sunscreen choices in the future. In a field where regular use matters as much as ingredient choice, that could be important.
