The hero’s journey, a storytelling blueprint that has captivated audiences for centuries, is not limited to ancient legends and superheroes. Recent research published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology sheds light on how framing one’s own life as a hero’s journey can enhance a sense of meaning and well-being.
The human brain is wired to make sense of the world through stories, a trait developed over millennia. We naturally gravitate towards narratives that stitch together various events into a coherent whole, with ourselves as the protagonists. These life tales help shape our identity and bring coherence to our existence.
To understand the connection between personal narratives and the hero’s journey, researchers simplified Joseph Campbell’s original 17-step storytelling arc into seven elements: a lead protagonist, a shift of circumstances, a quest, allies, a challenge, personal transformation, and a resulting legacy. This condensed version allowed them to explore how people’s life stories aligned with the hero’s journey and its impact on their sense of meaning.
The study involved more than 1,200 participants across four separate studies, including online participants and a group of middle-aged adults in Chicago, U.S. Participants shared their life stories and completed questionnaires assessing their sense of meaning, life satisfaction, and level of depression.
The findings revealed that individuals who incorporated more elements of the hero’s journey into their life stories reported a greater sense of meaning, increased flourishing, and reduced depression. These individuals demonstrated a clearer sense of self, embraced new adventures, formed strong goals, and enjoyed meaningful relationships.
Furthermore, narratives that closely followed the hero’s journey structure provided more benefits than other forms of storytelling, including basic “redemptive” arcs. While redemption often forms part of the transformation aspect within the hero’s journey, individuals who embraced the full hero’s journey reported higher levels of meaning in life.
Inspired by these discoveries, researchers developed a “restorying” intervention to help individuals perceive their lives as heroic quests. This intervention involved prompting participants to identify each of the seven elements in their own lives and weave them together into a coherent narrative.
Six studies involving more than 1,700 participants confirmed the effectiveness of the restorying intervention. Participants who engaged in this process reported an increased perception of their lives as hero’s journeys, leading to a greater sense of meaning, improved well-being, and enhanced resilience in the face of challenges. These individuals approached obstacles with a positive mindset and tackled them creatively.
It is important to note that the restorying intervention had the most significant impact when participants both identified the seven elements and connected them in a coherent story. Simply describing aspects of one’s life that resembled the hero’s journey without linking them together had a more modest effect on feelings of meaning.
Interestingly, the intervention also enhanced participants’ ability to perceive patterns and meaning in seemingly random stimuli. Retelling their stories according to the prompts made individuals more likely to perceive patterns in strings of letters on a computer screen.
The implications of these findings are significant. Anyone can frame their life as a hero’s journey and experience the associated benefits. By identifying personal values, embracing new experiences, setting goals aligned with classic quests, reflecting on lessons learned, and leaving a positive legacy for their community or loved ones, individuals can become heroes within their own lives.
While it may not involve saving the world on a grand scale, adopting a heroic perspective can lead to personal growth and create a more fulfilling narrative. Embracing the hero’s journey structure allows individuals to find deeper meaning, make their lives more coherent, and inspire themselves to overcome challenges.
The hero’s journey is not confined to mythology or fiction. It is a powerful narrative structure that can transform one’s perception of one’s own life. By embarking on their own heroic quests, individuals can unlock a greater sense of meaning and well-being.
