New Study Shows Doing These 8-Habits Can Slow Biological Aging by 6 Years

A recent study presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2023 has found that adhering to the organization’s “Life’s Essential 8” checklist may have a significant impact on slowing down biological aging. The checklist, consisting of eight lifestyle changes aimed at improving cardiovascular health, not only reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease but also appears to slow down the aging process.

The study involved 6,500 adults who were assessed based on their adherence to the Life’s Essential 8 checklist. This checklist includes important habits such as getting enough sleep, abstaining from smoking, engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy diet, managing a healthy weight, and keeping blood sugar, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure within normal ranges.

To measure the biological aging process, the researchers calculated each participant’s phenotypic age, which combines their chronological age with the results of nine blood tests that measure metabolism, inflammation, and organ function. By comparing the difference between chronological and phenotypic age, the researchers determined whether individuals were aging faster or slower relative to their chronological age.

The findings were remarkable. Individuals with high cardiovascular health had a biological age that was, on average, six years younger than their chronological age. On the other hand, those with low cardiovascular health were found to be aging faster than expected, with a biological age higher than their chronological age.

The study also revealed that individuals with the highest Life’s Essential 8 score, indicating optimal cardiovascular health, had a biological age that was about six years younger than individuals with the lowest scores. This suggests that following the recommended lifestyle changes can have a profound effect on slowing down biological aging.

The study highlights the importance of adopting the habits outlined in the Life’s Essential 8 checklist for improving cardiovascular health and potentially slowing down the aging process. Even small changes can make a significant difference when consistently built upon over time. It is essential to regularly consult healthcare providers and utilize community resources to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments.

The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the connections between lifestyle choices and biological aging. While further research is needed to fully understand the underlying mechanisms involved, embracing the habits outlined in the Life’s Essential 8 checklist offers a promising way to prioritise cardiovascular health and extend overall well-being.
