Obesity in boys may be linked to shrunken testicles and result in a higher risk of infertility for young men, Italian researchers said
According to a research conducted on boys aged 2 to 18 who were referred to the Unit of Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of Catania in Sicily for weight control, it was observed that those with normal insulin levels had testicular volume as high as twice that of boys with elevated insulin levels.
According to researchers, hyperinsulinemia (insulin resistance) in boys who were overweight or had obesity was observed to have a tendency to decrease testicular volume as compared to boys who did not have these conditions.
Despite being a retrospective review, the results are plausible considering the existing knowledge regarding obesity, hormonal regulation, and testosterone levels. However, further research is necessary to determine if these findings can be replicated and if weight loss can be a viable solution for enhancing testicular volume.
